April Events: Sea Otter Classic + Big Sur Marathon
Late April sees our stunning area host a pair of world-renowned athletic events: the Sea Otter Classic and the Big Sur International Marathon. Monte Verde Inn and Casa de Carmel serve as the perfect bed-and-breakfast accommodations from which to appreciate--and participate in--the excitement.
The Sea Otter Classic--named for the thick-furred marine mammals that frolic in the kelp beds off our coast--ranks as one of the biggest cycling celebrations on the planet, constituting four days chockfull of bike races, a massive expo, children's carnival, and other activities at the Fort Ord National Monument and the Laguna Seca Recreation Area in the Monterey area. Thousands of cyclists--and tens of thousands of cycling fans--congregate in this beautiful place to revel in their sport and the unforgettable location.
Whether you're pedaling or not, the Sea Otter Classic is a fantastic place to survey the newest in cycling technology--not least amid the lively, bustling, and ridiculously fun thoroughfares of the biggest bike expo on the continent. If you're a bicycle enthusiast, a pilgrimage to the Sea Otter is definitely something to add to the bucket list. And who knows? Maybe it'll evolve into an annual journey.
At the end of April, meanwhile, the Big Sur International Marathon takes runners in a variety of competitive events along the world-class California coastline. The 26-mile marathon anchoring the proceedings commences at Big Sur and wraps up in Carmel. Participants have soaring redwood groves, wind-sculpted cypresses, rolling farmland and rumpled coastal mountains--not to mention the great, misty Pacific, of course--to frame their exertions.
The marathon's not all: There are also shorter races, relays, and walks filling out the popular event. Many come simply to watch, lining the road to cheer on the runners and walkers.
Whether you're a cyclist, a marathon runner, or an enthusiastic and supportive spectator, both the Sea Otter Classic and the Big Sur International Marathon serve as excellent excuses to revel in the Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey scenery and lifestyle. Choosing one of our inns for your lodging makes the experience all the more special. You couldn't ask for a more convenient--or more comfortably elegant--place to bed down in one of the country's most magical corners.
