Perhaps one of the best-known things to do along the Monterey Peninsula is the 17-Mile Drive. A winding road that leads through an exclusive neighborhood and past scenic coastal views to the famed Pebble Beach, the 17-Mile Drive forms many visitors' favorite memories.

There is a 90-mile stretch of road clinging to the cliffs between Carmel and San Simeon, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Santa Lucia mountains on the other. The road is Highway One and the area is Big Sur. Big Sur is approximately 300 miles north of Los Angeles and 150 miles south of San Francisco. The name Big Sur came from the name El Sur Grande, “the Big South,” which was the name given to an unexplored and unmapped wilderness area along the California coast south of Monterey.California and Big Sur offers the visitor a spectacular coast line drive along Highway One In 1937, after eighteen years of construction, Highway One was completed. Highway One is known as California’s first scenic highway and is known the world over for its beauty and natural scenery. Carmel City Beach in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California is one of the region's most photographed beaches, seen in photographs around the globe, and painted by artists swept by the passion of this soft, pale, sand beach that is the hub of activity for those seeking a romantic stroll, walking the do, or returning from a round of surfing in the cool, Pacific Ocean of the Monterey Bay. Dogs can run free on this beach. Carmel City Beach is one of several beaches in Carmel. The other is extremely popular beach is Carmel River State Beach. How many wedding proposals have been made here on Carmel Beach? Probably thousands, at least. Carmel is one of the most beloved beaches as evidenced by the city Forest and Beach Commission that meets monthly to discuss beach tree trimming and vegetation. There aren't many beaches in California that garner such attention!

On Carmel Bay, the mile-long beach features a bird sanctuary in a lagoon (just before the Carmel River empties into the sea) featuring a wide variety of waterfowl and song birds. Monastery Beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach, is part of the park and is popular with scuba divers.

In 1914, when they first saw the unspoiled beauty of the Carmel-Big Sur coast south of California's Monterey Peninsula, Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) and his wife, Una (1884-1950), knew they had found their "inevitable place." Over the next decade, on a windswept, barren promontory, using granite boulders gathered from the rocky shore of Carmel Bay, Jeffers built Tor House and Hawk Tower as a home and refuge for himself and his family. It was in Tor House that Jeffers wrote all of his major poetical works: the long narratives of "this coast crying out for tragedy," the shorter meditative lyrics and dramas on classical themes, culminating in 1947 with the critically acclaimed adaptation of Medea for the Broadway stage, with Dame Judith Anderson in the title role.

Over the past 52 years the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) has been an active and highly visible part of the Monterey Peninsula community. Since our beginning in 1957 when 62 local companies and scores of individuals offered their services and dollars to make Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca a reality, SCRAMP has been a community effort. A non-profit organization, SCRAMP donates proceeds to local charities and civic organizations. SCRAMP has grown from presenting a single motor sport event each year to producing five annually including the Monterey Festival of Speed, Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, 35th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, Corona AMA Superbike Finale and the Monterey Sports Car Championships.

Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, also known as the Carmel Mission, is a Roman Catholic mission church in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It is part of the National Registry of Historic Places and a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It was the headquarters of the original Alta California Missions headed by Father Junipero Serra from 1770 until his death in 1784. The Mission also was the seat of the padre presidente, Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. It was destroyed in the mid 1800s, only to be restored beginning in 1884. It remains a parish church today and is the only one to have its original bell tower dome. Visited in the 1987 by Pope John Paul II.

The museum was developed in 1997 to provide an environment where curiosity and creativity flourish, while both children and adults learn together through experience. After a successful capital campaign and move in 2008, Monterey County Youth Museum (MY Museum) now resides at 425 Washington Street. This conveniently located facility is surrounded by the Monterey Sports Center and Dennis the Menace Park. MY Museum provides an environment unique to any other in Monterey County. Constructed as a microcosm of “what makes Monterey special”, this 8,500 square foot museum is packed with a variety of hands on exhibits, making each visit unique and exciting. JULY 16-30, 2011 Experience the majesty and magic of classical music at the Bach Festival. Music lovers across the Monterey Peninsula can enjoy a host of performances by international artists and performers. Through a series of concerts, recitals, master classes, lectures, open rehearsals and educational and outreach programs, the annual Bach Festival showcases world-class classical music from renowned professionals. The festival takes place in Carmel, but concerts run from a list of venues across the area in Carmel, Pebble Beach, Monterey, Seaside, Salinas and Stanford. Since 1935, this Carmel festival has been serving the classical music community, and this year’s festival promises to continue the tradition and legacy with unparalleled performances.

The Forest Theater Guild is dedicated to promoting the performing arts. Originally founded in 1910 by Herbert Heron as the Forest Theater Society, the current organization’s mission is to present quality performing arts and to foster growth and appreciation of the dramatic and allied arts among the broad community utilizing community talent with emphasis on youth. The purpose of the Forest Theater Guild is to uphold the heritage and integrity of Carmel’s historic Outdoor Forest Theater through stewardship, preservation of its unique character, and enhancement of the use of the theater property to promote community theater, films and events that support our mission of community theater and art. The oldest outdoor theater west of the Rockies, the Forest Theater was built in 1910 by Herbert Heron and Carmel’s Bohemians to provide an open-air theater where plays could be produced by “locals, who would also have the fun doing the acting, directing, lighting, costuming, and staging.”

The Historic Edgewater Cannery and Packing Building has been preserved and completely rebuilt by Bella Cinema, LLC and now offers visitors to Monterey County a new expanded experience of Cannery Row and Monterey Bay with an integrated entertainment venue in the heart of Cannery Row. The 17,000 square foot development includes a 290-seat 3D IMAX Theatre, the Edgewater Café, and an exclusive Guy Buffet Art Gallery and is conveniently located at 640 Wave Street across from the main parking facility for Cannery Row, and just a block from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Held every September on the Monterey Fairgrounds site the Monterey Jazz Festival began in 1958 as a dream for founders Jimmy Lyons and Ralph Gleason. It was a dream of a "sylvan setting with the best jazz people in the whole world playing on the same stage, having a whole weekend of jazz." That dream became reality with the first Jazz Festival bringing in artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, John Lewis, Shelly Manne, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Ernestine Anderson, Harry James, Max Roach, and Billie Holiday. Every year since then, every third full weekend in September sees the same caliber of talent grace the now nine stages on the Monterey Fairgrounds, as the Jazz Festival presents the best jazz performers in the world for a three-day celebration of the best in jazz. In addition, the Festival features jazz conversations, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, clinics, and an international array of food, shopping, and festivities spread throughout the 20-acre Monterey Fairgrounds.

Located in the heart of Carmel, Sunset Center is a stunning Carmel performance venue. Originally constructed in 1931, this theater in Carmel has welcomed performances from some of the finest masters of the arts, including singers, dancers, actors, chamber musicians and symphonies. The 18-hole "Bayonet" course at the Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course facility in Seaside, California features 7,094 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 75.1 and it has a slope rating of 139. Designed by Major General Robert McClure/(R)Gene Bates, the Bayonet golf course opened in 2007.

The oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi, and the original host of the California State Amateur, has been challenging golfers for more than a century.

The 18-hole "Laguna Seca" course at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch facility in Monterey, California features 6,157 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71 . The course rating is 70.7 and it has a slope rating of 127 on Rye grass. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, ASGCA/Robert Trent Jones, Jr., ASGCA, the Laguna Seca golf course opened in 1970.

The 18-hole "Monterey Pines" course at the Monterey Pines Golf Course facility in Monterey, California features 5,554 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 69 . Designed by Robert Muir Graves/(R)Kevin Tucker/Marc Messier, the Monterey Pines golf course opened in 2009. Navy Golf Program manages this facility, with Sam Jepsen as the Head Golf Professional.

Poppy Hills is a challenging golf course that weaves through the Del Monte Forest. The course was featured in a Golf Magazine article about golf on the Monterey Peninsula as well as in Carmel Magazine. The Zagat Survey ranked Poppy Hills the 12th “Most Popular Course” in the U.S, and the layout has been named “National Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association. The Robert Trent Jones Jr. design opened in 1986 and is the home course for the NCGA. It was the first course in the United States to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association. The course welcomes public play. It is recommended to join the NCGA to receive nearly a 75% discount off the green fee. The par-72 layout measures 6,857 yards from the black tees with a slope rating of 74.3/144.

Located in the center of downtown Carmel, Em Le’s is the village's second oldest restaurant. Em Le's was established in 1955 by local shop owners Emily and Louise. They cleverly coined the name Em Le's by combining their two names. Em Le’s opened in 1955 as a family run chocolate shop, and later transitioned into a full restaurant.   Emily and Louise are credited for inventing Em Le's Famous French Toast. The rich and delectable batter dipped delicacy was served with powdered sugar, cinnamon, and sliced almonds. Visitors from around the world would stop in at Em Le's just to try the widely renowned recipe. Since 1955 the Famous French Toast recipe has remained unchanged, and visitors continue to marvel over this delicacy that one can only find at Em Le's in Carmel, CA.   Em Le's serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Katy's Place, "Carmel's Breakfast Tradition"® since 1982, is perennially considered the gourmet breakfast restaurant by residents and visitors alike. In the heart of bustling Carmel Village, Katy's defines the essence of breakfast as this "most important meal of the day" should be enjoyed. In fact, served throughout the day are sixteen different sublime gourmet Eggs Benedict dishes over which patrons literally sigh with ecstasy.

The Tuck Box was constructed by designer-builder Hugh Comstock in 1927. It was first used as a restaurant in the early 1930's named "Sally's". In the early 1940's, two sisters from England started the small tea room which they named The Tuck Box. After operating the restaurant for eight years, Mrs. Bumbridge and Mrs. Watson, sold to another British couple, John and Elsie Grandfield. Elsie's delicious recipes have had the greatest and most lasting impact on The Tuck Box. Many are still in use today. In 1948, the Grandfields hired young Lucille Pinkston who eventually bought the restaurant in 1960. By 1964, Lucille had become Mrs. Glenn Berry and the couple also bought the property. In 1976, Glenn and Lucille sold the property and business to another long-time employee, Aleen Hillbun and her husband Harvey, thus ending Lucille's twenty-six years of association with and devotion to The Tuck Box English Tea Room.

We were founded in 1981. Appropriately that was the year the Rolling Stones had a monster hit with Start Me Up. And, like Mick Jagger, we’re both going strong several decades later. The first restaurant was right on Capitola Beach. It's not much larger than the average bedroom, but that tiny Capitola restaurant has become a landmark for surfers and beachgoers alike. Summer days often see the line for pizza reach nearly a block long. We're proud to say pizza and surf now go together in Capitola like hot dogs and baseball. Stoked with the success in Capitola, Pizza My Heart opened in downtown Santa Cruz a few years later. This was a big upgrade for both local and tourists as there was actually room to sit down and enjoy a slice. After the ’89 earthquake damaged our building, we moved to our current location on Pacific Avenue, bringing along our great pizza and even greater customers.

For more than 60 years, the Village Corner has been a Carmel landmark and a dining favorite of locals. This charming bistro offers relaxed, romantic dining amid colorful flowers and lush shrubbery, under the sun or stars. The cuisine is Mediterranean and California style. Mundaka is a Spanish style tapas restaurant in downtown Carmel, CA. It is the result of great friendships, a love of food and wine and music, and a long term romance with Spain and its culture. The cuisine at Little Napoli features the flavors of Southern Italy, from Rome and Napoli, all the way down to Sicily…with a little bit of New Jersey thrown in, as chef/owner Rich Pèpe was raised in Hoboken before coming out to California. Antipasti, Pizza, Pasta and Risotto are prepared perfectly with the handed down Pèpe family signature recipes. Little Napoli is located just a few blocks up from the beach in Carmel, so it is no surprise that seafood is one of the specialties here. Meyer Ranch, an all-natural hormone-free mid-west beef company, provides all the meat for the menu items. Rich Pepe is a baker by trade and grew up working in a family bakery in New Jersey & also owns Carmel Bakery. Breads and desserts here are all made in house. The award-winning wine list is mostly Italian, with some local producers rounding out the list. Pepe’s own wine from Atlas Peak in Napa, aptly named Pèpe Winery is also featured. Rich Pèpe is partners with the famed Italian winemaker Piero Antinori at Peppoli at Pebble Beach, and has an amazing collection of multiple vintages of the finest Italian wines, yet all at reasonable prices.

In 1947, Lolly and Bill Fassett moved with their five children into the Log House in Big Sur. Once a get away for the Trail Club of Jolon, the cabin is perched on a hillside overlooking the south coast of Monterey County. Big Sur, with yellow genesta popping in August heat; purple lupine tangling with sage on mountains shrouded in fog, was a wild sanctuary. Bill and Lolly imagined an open-air pavilion with good food and wine and dancing under the stars. It would be a place where people from up and down the coast would come and forget their cares. Working with Rowan Maiden, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, they sketched out their vision. Legendary Big Sur builders, Frank and Walter Trotter built the structure using native materials; redwood, hewn from the canyons and adobe bricks, which Lolly made with her own hands.

Menu highlights include entrees from the wood-burning grill and oak wood smoker, as well as the chef's daily creations featuring fresh fish and pasta. Creative American dishes such as fire-roasted artichoke with balsamic vinaigrette, house-smoked chicken with chile butter and the ever popular ice cream sandwich, are combined with impeccable service to form the cornerstones of Rio Grill's continuing success. The comfortable lounge and full bar serving our famous "Rio Rita," is lined with colorful caricatures of local faces and celebrities. Bar patrons can also order from the full menu while sitting by the fireplace or at the bar. Originally built and operated as a dairy, the restaurant remains much the charm of its early California heritage. Stop by and say hello some time! Fish House is wonderful. The menu is quite large and if you can't decide, then Rosie will make you half of this and half of that.
